"The Painter of the Night"

The Painter of the Night draws upon three art historical sources, two of them iconic and instantly recognizable, and one lesser-known: The Creation of Adam from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling, Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night at MOMA, and an anonymous ca. 1810 académie of a nude man once attributed to Géricault in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (view on metmuseum.org)

• "The Painter of the Night" is an original mixed-media work on paper by Philip Gladstone
• Made with watercolor, pen-and-ink, colored pencils and Windsor & Newton pigmented markers with sgrafitto and touches of gold metallic ink (in the border) on white clay-coated paper
• Image measures 12 by 15-1/4 inches (as shown, sheet slightly lager)
• Created in August 2019
• Signed by the artist with his monogram (PG) and dated "2019", lower left; signed again with his full name and inscribed with the title on the reverse
