About this work: Bird on the Wire is a mashup of two iconic historical images, amalgamated by Philip Gladstone here to suggest a new, layered story with timely emotional resonance for the artist. In the background of this work are, of course, elements borrowed from Pablo Picasso's celebrated oil Guernica, while the foreground pays homage to, and invests new meaning in, a well-known Pulitzer prize winning photograph known as The Kiss of Life captured by news photographer Rocco Morabito for the now-defunct Jacksonville (Florida) Journal in 1967. • Made with graphite, India ink, watercolor, watercolor pencils and Windsor & Newton pigmented markers on Arches 140 lb. hot-press watercolor paper
• Image measures 12-1/2 by 9-3/4 inches (as shown, sheet slightly lager)
• Created in December 2019
• Signed by the artist with his monogram (PG) and dated "2019", upper right, and dedicated "For Rocco Morabito", lower right; signed again "Philip Gladstone" and inscribed with the title on the reverse
