"On the Hook"

- About: On the Hook is a 'mashup' composition utilizing several vintage source images, intermingled as if in a dream, and reflecting our anxious times: two early 20th century photographs by Lewis Hine of a 1930s Empire State building construction worker and a ca. 1910 newsboy smoking, a 1950s U.S. Army photograph of one soldier comforting another after a loss, and (of course) the iconic Uncle Sam poster
- Made with watercolor, pen-and-inks, colored pencils and Windsor & Newton pigmented markers with sgraffito (scraping) on clay-coated paper
- Image measures 16-3/4 by 11-3/4 inches (as shown, sheet slightly larger)
- Created in 2017
- Provenance: Sold by the artist to a private California collection, 2017; re-acquired from the late collector's estate by Philip Gladstone Studio, 2023
- Signed by the artist with his monogram cipher (PG) and dated "2017", lower left; signed again with the artist's full name and inscribed with the title on the reverse
