- An original work on paper by Philip Gladstone
- About: The Recalcitrant is a story told utilizing a mashup of historic imagery: renderings of Victorian-era villagers in the English seaside town of Whitby, based on photographs by Francis Meadow Sutcliffe (1853-1941); a climbing youth (the eponymous recalcitrant) adapted from a circa 1900 photograph by Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856-1931); and, of course, Auguste Rodin's iconic The Thinker
- Made with watercolor, gouache, charcoal, pen-and-inks and watercolor pencils with some sgraffito (scraping) on clay-coated paper
- Image measures 16-1/2 by 10-1/2 inches (as shown, sheet slightly larger)
- History: Originally created as a pen-and-ink drawing and sold to a private collection in 2015 as "The Villagers"; acquired by the artist from the late collector's estate in 2023, and extensively reworked in color and re-titled in May 2025
- Signed by the artist with his monogram cipher (PG) and dated "2025", lower right; inscribed with the title and signed again with the artist's full name on the reverse
- Custom framing by the artist available upon request Examples
