"Rope" is an original mixed-media painting on panel by Philip Gladstone
  • A riff on two student académie oils by unknown artists of the same model in the same pose from a different angle, painted side-by-side ca. 1810 in the studio of Pierre-Narcisse-Guérin (one is in the Metropolitan Museum [VIEW], the other was recently auctioned by Sotheby's [VIEW]), with a nod to Thomas Eakins' iconic The Swimming Hole
  • Made with acrylic over mixed-media underpainting (media includes pen-and-ink, charcoal, chalks and watercolor) on paper archivally mounted to a cradled wood panel; finished with a gloss UV-filtering varnish (no glazing required for display)
  • Image measures 12 by 12 inches
  • Created in September 2023
  • Signed by the artist with his monogram cipher (PG) and dated "2023", lower right; signed again with the artist's full name and inscribed with the title on the reverse
