"Rope"is an original mixed-media painting on panel by Philip Gladstone
A riff on two student académie oils by unknown artists of the same model in the same pose from a different angle, painted side-by-side ca. 1810 in the studio of Pierre-Narcisse-Guérin (one is in the Metropolitan Museum [VIEW], the other was recently auctioned by Sotheby's [VIEW]), with a nod to Thomas Eakins' iconicThe Swimming Hole
Made with acrylic over mixed-media underpainting (media includes pen-and-ink, charcoal, chalks and watercolor) on paper archivally mounted to a cradled wood panel; finished with a gloss UV-filtering varnish (no glazing required for display)
Image measures 12 by 12 inches
Created in September 2023
Signed by the artist with his monogram cipher (PG) and dated "2023", lower right; signed again with the artist's full name and inscribed with the title on the reverse
