Artist's note: "Patience" is a study after an 1840 oil painting entered into the Ecole des Beaux-Arts "Half-Figure" annual competition (whose entrants had to complete a torso in six seven-hour sessions) by Edouard Antoine Naudin, the winner of the competition that year
Signed by the artist with his monogram (PG), upper right; signed again with his full name, dated and inscribed "After Edouard Antoine Naudin" on the reverse
